Models Association of Malawi in partnership with other players will tomorrow host the Lilongwe International Fashion Showcase at N1 Café and Grill.
This is the first top event to be hosted by the association, which seeks to promote its activities but also give a platform to models, designers and make-up artists to showcase their work.
Chris Kunda Daka, who is the association’s president, said Thursday they were ready for the event that will bring on board 18 designers, 25 models and seven make-up artists.

“We are excited to give the country this event. This is the first big event for us and it is more like the grand opening because we are also targeting another event of the same nature in October in Blantyre. We are talking to a top hotel to host the event,” Daka said.
He said the models industry has been sidelined for a long time and that it was time to show what it has for the country.
“We want to be recognised and the best way to do that is to hold such activities. We want to promote the models industry and at the same time showcase what our designers have. We will start with a red carpet event before going to the showcase,” Daka said.

He said the models will showcase works by designers.
Some of the designers set to participate at the showcase include Afri Designs, Queen Tenge, Top One Fashion, Zanji Designs, Nomonde Designs, Fashion Pallets, Jenis Couture, Chicha Fashions and Vivietta by Lauretta.
Recently, Wenafwi Mwase of Zanji Designs said she was looking forward to the platform to showcase her designs and network with other designers.
In another development, celebrated fashion designer Lilly Alfonso was recently recognised by the president and chairperson of directors at Afreximbank during his opening speech at the 26th Afreximbank Annual meetings held in Cairo, Egypt, from June 15 to18.
“I was appreciated alongside other African creatives who are contributing to the transformation of the African economy in their different fields. To be recognised with such names like Aliko Dangote is a great honour.
“In Africa, we have many fashion designers and creative people but to be on the list is something else,” Alfonso, who is running with her 100 -Year Plan, said.
